Omar Harfouch Decries Lebanon’s ‘Racist Laws’ in Riveting UN HRC Speech

On September 26, 2023, Omar Harfouch, a known Lebanese pianist delivered a captivating speech during the 54th Regular Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva. Harfouch, who despite being born into a Sunni family, received his education from a Christian school which contributed to his views of respecting all humans regardless of their religion, worldviews, color or race. During his speech, he shed light on the persecution he currently experiences in his home country of Lebanon.

The musician revealed that he is facing charges from the military court and could potentially face the death penalty. These charges are based on allegations that he was in the room close to an American-Israeli journalist and despite that gave a speech at the European Parliament.

Through his address broadcasted via UN Web TV Harfouch described Lebanon as a country with Semitic tendencies and discriminatory practices. He urged the community present at the Human Rights Council to take action, against Lebanon’s strict policies that limit freedom of expression and association.

During a moment Harfouch directly addressed those attending the session by questioning whether any Jews, Israelis, Zionists or pro-Israelis were present. He emphasized that according to law he would be required to discriminate against such individuals—a requirement that he adamantly refused to comply with. Harfouch passionately stated that no one should be judged based on their birthplace, religion or nationality. He appealed to the council members to support efforts aimed at abolishing Lebanese laws that promote racism and discrimination.

Harfouch’s speech attracted a lot of attention from human rights advocates and participants to the UN HRC, showing their concern and support. As the 54th Session of the Human Rights Council carries on discussing human rights matters the global community eagerly anticipates additional responses and possible actions in response, to Harfouch’s impactful statements.
