In March 2023, a visit to the building revealed a sculpture of Swiss artist Heinrich-Maximilian Imhof. Born in 1795 in Bürglen (UR), he trained in Stuttgart with Johann Heinrich Dannecker in 1820 then in Rome with Bertel Thorvaldsen in 1824. He then stayed in Greece before settling permanently in Rome where he died in 1869.
Imhof became famous for his subjects representing characters from the Old Testament, this is the case here with this figure showing the mother of Moses depositing her child in a basket on the Nile to save him. This work, produced in 1866, was executed in two copies by the artist. The first dates from 1848 and is now on display at the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg.
In an excellent state of conservation, this sculpture has just been transferred to the Art and History Museum and will be the subject of in-depth study.
