Thales Awarded Contract to Provide Pathmaster Mine Countermeasures System to Republic of Singapore Navy

(IN BRIEF) Thales has been awarded a contract by the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) to supply the Pathmaster mine countermeasures system, featuring the M-Cube mission management system, Towed Synthetic Aperture Sonar (TSAS), and the MiMap sonar data analysis tool. This system will help the RSN safely navigate the busy maritime straits around Singapore by enabling real-time mine detection, classification, and localisation. The contract marks the first Pathmaster system in Asia and will be supported by the Thales Singapore Defence Hub, ensuring operational effectiveness and ongoing development. The intelligent system, already deployed by the British and French Navies, brings advanced AI-driven target detection capabilities and plays a key role in protecting Singapore’s vital sea lanes.

(PRESS RELEASE) LA DÉFENSE, 19-May-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Thales has been awarded a contract to supply the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) with its advanced mine countermeasures system, Pathmaster, which includes the M-Cube mission management system, Towed Synthetic Aperture Sonar (TSAS), and the MiMap sonar data analysis tool. This cutting-edge solution will enable the RSN to accurately detect, classify, and localise mines in real-time, ensuring the safety of one of the busiest maritime straits in the region.

Pathmaster is the world’s first sea-proven mine countermeasures solution and is already in service with the British Royal Navy and the French Navy under the Maritime Mine Countermeasure (MMCM) programme. With its unrivaled detection capabilities and low false alarm rate, the system will play a crucial role in safeguarding Singapore’s maritime trade routes, which are vital to the region’s economy. The contract, awarded on 28 March 2025 through ST Engineering (STE), marks the first time that the Pathmaster system will be deployed in Asia.

The Pathmaster system will be integrated into ST Engineering’s unmanned surface vehicle and will feature artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance target detection and identification, reducing the workload for operators. Thales will also provide tools for managing mine databases and libraries, making the system even more effective in dynamic maritime environments.

The system will be supported by the Thales Singapore Defence Hub, which was established in 2023 to provide maintenance, operational support, and local development services. Located in close proximity to the Singapore Armed Forces and in partnership with ST Engineering, the hub will ensure that the RSN’s Pathmaster system operates at peak efficiency.

Thales’ Pathmaster solution represents a significant leap forward in the RSN’s vision for an autonomous system of systems, enabling enhanced operational capabilities while reinforcing the safety of personnel. As seas become increasingly congested and new threats emerge, the need for effective mine countermeasures has never been more critical in ensuring the sovereignty and safety of Singapore’s sea lines of communication.

Sébastien Gueremy, VP of Underwater Systems at Thales, commented: “This latest contract award reflects the trust that the Republic of Singapore Navy places in Thales’ naval technologies. Pathmaster represents a significant step forward in enhancing RSN’s operational capabilities, and we are proud to be part of their efforts to maintain the safety and security of Singapore’s maritime routes. As the first Pathmaster system in Asia, this contract strengthens Thales’ position as a key supplier to the RSN, addressing their operational needs and reinforcing Singapore’s leadership in mine warfare.”
