Scania Unveils Next-Gen e-Machine Transforming Battery-Electric Bus Efficiency

(IN BRIEF) Scania has unveiled an advanced e-machine for its battery-electric bus platform that offers four power options and integrated gearbox choices to suit diverse operational needs, along with a new three-battery pack delivering 312 kWh and a high-powered rear charging interface that significantly cuts charging times. This comprehensive drive unit, which combines an electric motor, inverter, gearbox, and oil system, is designed to boost energy efficiency and performance while meeting stringent cybersecurity standards. Anna Ställberg of Scania highlights that the innovation addresses the dual challenges of emission regulations and the specific demands of electric mobility, aligning with the company’s sustainability objectives.

(PRESS RELEASE) SÖDERTÄLJE, 11-Mar-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Scania has taken a notable leap forward in its e-mobility journey with the launch of an upgraded e-machine for its fully battery-electric bus platform. Designed to offer unmatched performance and efficiency while maintaining zero emissions, the new e-machine now comes with four distinct power options and an integrated two- or four-speed gearbox, tailored to meet a range of operational demands.

In a clear shift from its previous single power option, the enhanced e-machine allows customers to choose between 240 kW, 270 kW, 300 kW, and 330 kW to best suit varied operating conditions. The inclusion of a selectable gearbox further optimizes energy efficiency, ensuring smooth acceleration and effective performance even in challenging scenarios such as steep gradients or heavy-duty operations.

Complementing these features, Scania has introduced a new three-battery pack option offering 312 kWh of installed energy. A significant innovation is the addition of a rear charging interface capable of delivering a higher charging power of 325 kW (up to 500 A), a substantial improvement over the existing front charging solution, which provides 130 kW (up to 200 A). This upgrade dramatically reduces charging times, thereby enhancing the overall availability and operational uptime of the buses.

Beyond its impressive powertrain capabilities, the e-machine is engineered as a compact drive unit that integrates the electric motor, inverter, gearbox, and oil system into one cohesive assembly. The motor efficiently converts stored electric energy into mechanical torque, while the inverter transforms direct current into a three-phase alternating current, allowing precise control over both speed and torque. A dedicated oil system, complete with two pumps, ensures the e-machine remains cool and lubricated, further optimizing performance and reliability.

The upgraded e-machine is fully compliant with the latest cybersecurity legislation, underscoring Scania’s commitment to both operational excellence and safety. Anna Ställberg, Head of Urban Solutions for People Transport Solutions at Scania Group, commented on the launch:

“Bus operators today grapple with the dual challenge of meeting stringent emission regulations while addressing the unique demands of electric mobility. With our new e-machine, along with the expanded battery and charging options, we have developed a solution that aligns with both our customers’ operational needs and our shared sustainability objectives.”
